January 28, 2024 Dear PHS Families, On January 30, you will have access to your child’s report card through your MyCBE account. Please see the following LINK for instructions on how to view report cards. By the end of January, your child’s report card will be available to view in your MyCBE account. The report card is one of the ways teachers communicate how your child is progressing in their learning. Teachers may also share learning progress through parent/teacher conferences, your child’s daily work and assignments, and other ongoing communication with you. What to Expect in Your Child’s Report Card CBE began implementing the new Alberta Education Curriculum: · Fall 2022 start: · Mathematics (K-3) · English Language Arts and Literature (K-3) · Physical Education and Wellness (K-6) · Fall 2023 start: · Mathematics (4-6) · English Language Arts and Literature (4-6) · French Language Arts and Literature (K-3) · Science (K-3) In the new curriculum, some things students learn may be new or may have previously been taught in higher grades. Students could be missing foundational pieces from previous grades, and their report card indicators might not be as high as before. This is expected when there is a new curriculum. It might take more than one school year to build these foundational skills. Even though each grade has its own curriculum, many ideas come up again each year, helping students to build on what they already know and do well. Teachers continue to make learning interesting and inspiring and are adapting to students' needs during this transition. As always, if you have questions about your child's learning, please reach out to their teacher. EES and Kindergarten Assembly
Our EES and pm Kindergarten classes hosted their assembly last week where they shared their learning with us. Our EES classes shared their personalized land acknowledgements. Each student contributed by sharing what they like about the land. Our Kindergarten students shared a story, puppets, and movement around the Mortimer story.
Read-A-Thon
We also had a kick-off event for the Read-A-Thon, which will officially start on Monday, January 29 through to Thursday, February 29th. Students were sent home with more information in their backpacks on Friday.
The Read-A-Thon is a school fundraiser that intensifies student engagement and excitement around reading and raises funds that are used towards supplementing student learning experiences. Last year, nearly $15,000 was raised, which allowed us to offer a photography residency to students, purchase camera equipment and accessories and contributed towards materials used to host the Celebration of Learning that many families attended. Proceeds from this year’s Read-A-Thon will also be used to supplement student learning and offer enhanced learning experiences and or resources.
We have some exciting events planned in conjunction with the Read-A-Thon and Family Literacy Day.
Family Literacy Day is January 27, 2024 and more information can be found here: https://abclifeliteracy.ca/all-programs/family-literacy-day/
Over the course of the Read-A-Thon, we will have the following special days at school:
· Wednesday, January 31 – Bring a stuffy that can fit in your backpack for reading time in class · Wednesday, February 7 – Students will plan to read with their school buddies · Wednesday, February 14 – Bring a small flashlight – students will read using these lights in the classroom · Wednesday, February 21 – Principal and Assistant Principal Read Aloud – The principal and assistant principal will share a recording reading a special book to the students. · Wednesday, February 28 – This is also Pink Shirt Day – Read a Kindness book!
On the week of February 5th, we will have two DEAR times planned each day (Drop Everything And Read). Make sure your child has a book at school either from home or the library as books will be needed to travel with students throughout the day. There will be an element of surprise as students will not know when the announcement might happen. Sincerely, Ms. Paull and Ms. Muir
