School Access
The front doors will now be secured and locked at all times. When you approach the front doors you will see a call panel on your left. Please press the button and wait until the front office staff answer your call. The front office will confirm your identity before allowing you to enter the school. Please look up at the camera when speaking. The before and after program will continue to use the same system as before.
Entry/Exit
Students are assigned doors nearest their classrooms for regular entry and exit. For security purposes, these doors are locked after morning, lunch and recess entry. Students arriving late must use the front doors and check in at the office. Students use their assigned doors for exit at the end of the day.
Visitors & Volunteers Sign-In
All parents, visitors and volunteers must report directly to the office and receive a visitor card before proceeding to other areas of the school. This is an additional security measure to keep our school safe. Please note that, under no circumstances, can a visitor (including parents) go to the classrooms without checking-in to the office first.
Recess
All students are expected to go outside for recess and lunch recess. We ask that students come suitably dressed for the weather. An indoor recess will be held when weather conditions pose a safety concern, or when it is colder than -20C (with or without the wind chill factor).
Cold Weather and CBE Blue Days
As temperatures drop, please ensure your child is dressed appropriately for outdoor activities, including recess and Physical Education. Warm layers, jackets, boots, hats, and mitts help students stay comfortable and ready for learning both indoors and outdoors.
What is a Blue Day?
A Blue Day is declared when the temperature (including wind chill) reaches –20°C or below, or during severe weather such as heavy rain or extreme wind. On these days, outdoor activities such as recess and lunch breaks are moved indoors to keep students safe.
Blue Day Procedures
- Entry: Doors open early at 7:55 a.m., and students may enter through any door.
- Supervision: Teachers are on duty to welcome and supervise students in hallways and classrooms until the regular start time.
- Identification: A blue circle will be posted on school doors to indicate these procedures are in effect.
- Outdoor Recesses: morning and lunch are canceled or modified based on weather conditions.
- Patrols: School Safety Patrols are not on duty when the temperature is below –20°C or during other inclement weather conditions. Students should use extra caution when crossing streets.
Additional Information
- Students are encouraged to dress warmly even on Blue Days, as brief outdoor movement may still occur or be required in an emergency.
- The school website displays current weather conditions at the bottom of the homepage.
- On non–Blue Days, students will enjoy regular outdoor recess as usual.
These steps help ensure all students stay safe, warm, and ready to learn throughout the winter months.
Air Quality Restriction Days
We regularly monitor the Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) from Environment Canada to guide decisions about outdoor activities.
When the AQHI is 7 or higher, air quality is considered poor. On these days:
- Students come inside right away in the morning, following the same procedures as a Blue Day.
- Recess and lunch may be held indoors for all students.
- According to CBE Air Quality Guidelines, schools postpone or cancel outdoor activities such as recess, Physical Education, or field trips.
- If outdoor activities continue, strenuous activity is limited, and rest periods are provided.
- The CBE works with facility operators to adjust ventilation systems and reduce the intake of outdoor air during poor air quality events.
These steps help protect student health and safety while maintaining a calm, predictable routine during periods of poor air quality.
Playground
In accordance with CBE policy, and to prevent accidents or injuries bicycles, skateboards, inline skates, scooters and sleds of all types are not to be used on school grounds. As well, for safety reasons, backpacks must not be worn while on the creative playground. All students are asked to use the equipment as it is intended to be used.
Fire Drills
Detailed plans are in place to respond to fire and other emergency situations. Practice fire drills are held on a regular basis. All students and adults are required to evacuate the building during fire drills. Many drills are held without warning, therefore, it is essential that students wear indoor footwear at all times.
Lockdowns
All CBE schools are required to practice lockdowns in the same way that we practice fire drills. The procedures for lockdowns are developed with the Calgary Police Service and are part of each school’s Emergency Response Plan. If you have questions about lockdown drills or lockdown procedures, please contact your principal.
Evacuation Procedures
In the event that the school needs to be evacuated for any reason, all staff have been trained according to CBE standards. All schools have a primary and a secondary evacuation site. In the event of an evacuation, you will receive an email, phone or SMS notification from the school.
Video Surveillance Technology
The Calgary Board of Education may install and use video surveillance technology at select schools to support maintaining a safe and secure environment and to help control vandalism and criminal activity on school property.
Personal information gathered by video surveillance is collected under the authority of the Education Act and the Protection of Privacy Act section 4. The users of this information are the principal or designate and law enforcement personnel in the case of reported incidents that would require an investigation. Only authorized persons will review video surveillance information.
This technology is considered a complement to, and not a replacement for, CBE's strategies in supporting a welcoming, caring, safe, and respectful learning and work environment for students and staff.
Approval, installation and use of video surveillance technology will comply with Administrative Regulation 1066.
For questions or concerns, please contact the school principal.
